Kind Words

“I struggled so badly after my first 2 births, especially because of tearing and prolapse.  Having Sarah as a Doula after my third birth made me realize that what I thought was a luxury was actually the essential piece I’d been missing from the postpartum recovery puzzle!  And the kiddos absolutely love her!”

What should I know about Doulas?

Doulas are non-clinical professionals that provide evidence-based information and emotional and physical support to families after the birth of a baby. Doula Sarah is certified through the Childbirth and Postpartum Professional Association (CAPPA).

  • Postpartum Doulas offer support, information, instruction, comfort, and resources in the postpartum period. Supporting the mother’s recovery, giving instruction on infant care and feeding, and assisting with household organization are all part of their role in a family’s home.

  • Skilled support is the perfect description of what Postpartum Doulas provide. Acting as consultants and resources, not clinicians, they encourage and promote excellent communication between the family and their health care team. Postpartum Doulas encourage informed decision-making and self-advocacy, support the choices of the new family, and provide non-clinical care. When they observe situations that require attention or support from a healthcare professional, they are quick to offer appropriate resources.

  • Because Postpartum Doulas are non-clinical professionals and their courses for certification do not qualify them to act as a medical care provider, CAPPA Postpartum Doulas do not dispense medical advice, diagnose medical conditions, interpret medical diagnoses or clinical results, perform clinical procedures, or prescribe/administer medications or treatments of any kind. Some Postpartum Doulas hold multiple certifications which may qualify them to discuss healthcare concerns if they hold the appropriate qualifications.
